The Moscow Automobile And Road Construction State Technical University (MADI) was founded in 1930. On December, 13, 1930 the Council of People's Commissioners of the USSR decided: To organize the Moscow Automobile and Road Engineering Institute on the basis of road faculty of Moscow Railway Engineering Institute and the Supreme Road School.

The university has been recognized on numerous occasions for its accomplishments since being established over 75 years ago. By the Decree of the "Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR issued on December, 8, 1980, MADI was awarded the Labor Red Banner for the education of qualified specialists for national economy and the development of science. In 1988 it received the of Friendship of Vietnam award.

MADI earned the status of the Technical University in 1992. The formal name of the university was changed in 2001 to "State Technical University - MADI". The name change was granted in recognition of the university's maturity, its position as a leading academic institution in the Russian Federation, and its expanding, international mission.

The MADI (State Technical University) is one of the largest higher education  institution in Russia, and the leading scientific and methodical center on training students for diplomas in engineering, bachelor's and master's degrees. It also produces highly trained individuals for the design of highways, bridges and airports; operation and maintenance of transport facilities; economic analysis and management of the transport system; and road traffic safety.

The International  Department was formed under the order of the Ministry of Education of the USSR in 1960 and since then carries out the activity on the basis of the current legislation of the Russian Federation, the Status and decisions of MADI (STU) Academic Council, orders by MADI Rectorate.

For all time of existence the International  Department was headed  by vice-rectors: Ivanov Valery Vasilevich, Yelizarov Vladimir Aleksandrovich. Within last 18 years the International  department was headed by Akmaev Kyazym Hasyanovich who continues to work as the adviser of the MADI Rector. Now the International  department of the University is headed by the vice-rector on economy and the international relations Chubukov Alexander Bezhanovich.

MADI (STU) carries out the international cooperation in the field of the higher and postgraduate education in the following areas:

  1. Professional training for foreign countries in directions and forms of education accepted in MADI (STU);
  2. Retraining and improvement of professional skills of teachers and science personnel, and also exchange of teachers;
  3. Organization and carrying out of students Workshops abroad in the leading companies according to specialities/directions of education;
  4. Realization of the international scientific projects and contracts;
  5. The organization and carrying out of scientific exchanges in the field of motor transport, road construction and other adjacent areas of a science and technics in the CIS, Baltia and other countries;
  6. Participation in the international symposiums, conferences and other similar actions.

Within the limits of the international activity the University trains foreign students in the specialities/directions specified in the state license given to MADI (STU) (preparatory faculty, basic faculties, postgraduate study, doctoral studies, scientific training).

Preparatory Faculty for Foreign Citizens is a state educational pre-uni-versity centre, one of the oldest in Russia. It was founded in 1960 and since that time has trained more that 12500 foreign citizens from more than 70 countries. Approximately 300 foreign students are enrolled in faculty courses each year.

This faculty is the head faculty in the system of pre-university training of foreign citizens and coordinates activities of all other such faculties in Russia, it offers training in 5 specializations: technical engineering, economy, natural sciences, arts, medicine/biology. Students are taught the Russian language, mathematics, physics, chemistry, technical drawing, biology, economical geography, computer science, history, economics and literature.

MADI (STU) carries out communication with international and national organizations of various countries of the world, has agreements on scientific and technical cooperation. With many of them the University is included into the international association of automobile and road formation (MAADO). MADI (STU) has the accreditation of the London building university.

MADI (STU) is a member of the following international organizations: Russian Monitoring Committee IGIR at UNESCO;         Association of International Automobile Carriers (AIAC); Committee on Transport, Communications, to Tourism and Development of an Infrastructure of the Economic and Social Commission of the United Nations for the Countries of Asia and Pacific Ocean (ESCATO the United Nations); Constant International Committee on the organization of the international symposiums on the theory of transport flows; International European Organizations on Ecological Safety of Transport (I) affiliated to the World Bank and the Ministry of Transport of France; the German Society of Technical Cooperation (GTZ); the World Automobile Federation (the Central automotor club); the German automobile club; the Interdepartmental Commission on the international partnership in the field of formation (Working group);         International Association for Automotive and Road Engineering Education (IAAREE); the International association of Universities; The Asian Alliance on development of a transport infrastructure; the International association of continuous formation; the International Institute of Civil Engineers; the European association of the international formation; the International society on improvement of quality of formation; The International Association of Forwarding Agents (FATA).

Admission of foreign citizens to MADI (STU) is carried out in two ways:

  1. On the base of intergovernmental agreements (on expense of the Russian Federation state budget)
  2. On the base of individual contracts (on expense of the student or firms, enterprises or any organization sending him to get education).

Admission on the base of intergovernmental agreement is made on special letters from the Ministry of Education and Science of the Russian Federation, Federal Agency of Education or Department of International Education and Cooperation.

Foreign citizens admitted to MADI (STU) get all necessary conditions for studies on the chosen level of education and speciality. Training of foreign citizens is carried out under curricula and according to programs of the Higher professional training of the Russian Federation. As an exertion individual academic plans are possible. After graduation from MADI (STU) foreign citizens receive diplomas and certificates of the Russian Federation state sample.

MADI (STU) includes Russian Language Centre which has long standing relations with Russian Centre for International Scientific and Cultural Cooperation (within the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation).

Training is conducted under individual programs only on contract basis.

Institute for improvement of professional skill and retraining which acts within MADI (STU) International Training centre and retraining admits of teachers of technical universities and engineering high schools (the Center of engineering pedagogics) operates.

The center is a division of IPSR and focuses on the retraining of teachers in engineering high schools and technical universities, thereby improving their professional skills. This retraining is designed to qualify Russian teachers to integrate with the European system. The teacher preparation corresponds to the requirements of the International Society on Engineering Pedagogic (IGIP) of which Russia is a member. The training program includes the following subjects: Engineering pedagogic; Basis of psychology; Business dialogue; Oratory; Means of computer support of teaching activity; Means of training; Modern technologies of training; Didactics of laboratory works; Biological bases of development and training; Foreign language.

After the termination of training teachers receive the document of the state sample which serves as acknowledgement of a level of the received knowledge to requirements IGIP.

During the existence of the International Department students from more than 150 countries has been trained in MADI (STU). The representation of countries from which citizens study in MADI (STU) in 2006/07 years is marked by circles.
